Book review: Unveiled

Title – Unveiled

Author – Rumki Chowdhury

Category – Poetry

Publisher – Djarabi Kitabs Publishing (2017)

Rumki Chowdhury wrote this book about the hijab (Ironic isn’t it? That the name is Unveiled). The book reads like a poem but feels like a story and has some pretty illustrations, which help convey her messages even better. Ma Sha Allah!

The book is divided into 3 chapters – Body, Mind and soul. In my opinion, this represents the idea that the hijab is not just a physical veil we place to cover our heads and necks, it encompasses the body, mind and soul. And then Chowdhury wraps it up with her own hijab story. Her writing style is simple and fluid and I think she is a great storyteller Ma Sha Allah!

One thing that stood out for me is the fact that the hijab is a struggle but as much as people see it as oppression, we that wear it feel liberated Ma Sha Allah! It is more than just a piece of cloth; it is a way of life. It is obedience to our Rabb. It identifies us and then dignifies us. And as much as our stories differ, it unifies us in our struggle.

I would recommend the book to anyone who loves poems, young Muslimahs who are trying to get used to the idea of the hijab.
